Better Grades for Struggling College Students

Dear struggling college students,

Be patient with yourself when studying and learning new material. There is a learning curve and our minds are all growing and expanding as we tackle new bodies of knowledge. Some subjects come easier to us than others, based on our internal wiring and personal interests. It is perfectly okay to excel in one subject and be less than excellent in another. Everyone has their unique expertise. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Keep your head up and remember the sun always shines above the clouds. Find a study partner or go to student services and request a tutor. You can also ask your professor for assistance after class (as they will at least know you are sincere and trying, which they will appreciate).

As a former high school class clown and struggling student, I realize the light bulb comes on for us all at different times and seasons of our lives. Nevertheless, as you commit to a life of continual learning and growth, wholeheartedly and patiently embrace the process, enjoy the journey, decide not to compare yourself with others, and are patient with yourself; you will surely see and experience learning gains. Be your best. Pray that it is blessed and thereafter rest.

I was a B student in high school with a 2.8 GPA when I graduated. Once studying at a local community college with no more girls and baseball to distract me, I earned an Associate degree (2 year program) with a 3.8 GPA. I thereafter earned my bachelor degree from UCF (Orlando, FL) in a year, graduating with a 3.4 GPA completing a four year program in just three years and graduated at the age of 20 (three months before my 21st birthday).

That being said, struggling college students can find hope in my personal story and testimony. I never thought in a million years I would become an international educator. I have lived and taught in Taiwan, mainland China, Thailand, Guatemala and beyond. I now am asked to provide teacher training around the world and serve as an inspirational speaker throughout the globe. Commit to your education, personal enrichment, development and growth college students. Do not under estimate what you can do and the exponential increase that can come from your foundational education.
