China Education vs American Education

China Education vs American Education

As an international educator and former class clown (as a teenage disruptive student) I can quickly tell you the difference between China education and American education. First of all, Chinese students go to school day and night, as they genuinely want to learn and their parents will accept nothing less from their children. Often Chinese students attend multiple schools to learn and prepare for standardized tests, acquire foreign languages, learn a skill, a musical instrument, master a sport and prepare to study abroad. Of course, American parents who genuinely care about the children often do the same thing, but I see more of it on a larger scale happening when I lived and taught in China. At the boarding school where I taught in Shenzhen, China for 2 years, we had youth from 12 to 18 living and studying there from 8am to 9pm at night. Chinese students were kept busy and not allowed to cause mischief.

Hahah…..when I taught in Tianjin, China, 12th students were good, but administrators when I was hired asked me to teach one class from hell on Wednesday for an hour, which consisted of 40+ middle school kids (ages 12-14) like some of the angels and devils I now teach in Los Angeles County (of course I’m joking because God loves all children and they are all precious full of potential). Yet even diamonds require intense pressure to make them shine and bring forth their brilliance.

Back to my China story. In China there were 4 bad boys who always talked trash and disrupted class. So, I’d tell them upon annoyance to go outside and they would. When one boy refused, I picked him up and carried him outside the classroom while the rest of the students cheered and clapped. I soon discovered the troublemakers’ classmates were equally annoyed with him and were waiting for a teacher to stand up to him and stop tolerating his nonsense.

Haha….That night after work, I waited for a phone call or email, thinking I might lose my job. Yet to my surprise nobody ever complained or at least if they did, I never heard about it. Had I done that in America, I’d probably be thrown in jail because they are so soft and nice to the little devils causing mischief. This is why America is on its way down.

When I was a boy, principals of schools could spank kids and take care of business. Not any more. Now schools and administrators are putting up with such disruptions and often sending such kids back to class to cause more mischief. Schools in some parts of California emphasize “social contracts” to suck up to kids and try to “win” their hearts and minds rather than take care of business and teach class as educators should be doing. At least this is what I am witnessing in backward California. Florida where I come from doesn’t operate with such weakness thank God. Amazing difference across America, from Florida to California. In fact, even in the San Francisco Bay area where I taught last year, there was no mention of social contracts in educating youth. However, in Los Angeles County, teachers were told to not even teach the first 3 weeks of school, but simply to build relationships with kids and work on social contracts.

The more I travel and experience education around the world, the more respect I have for education in China and elsewhere throughout Asia. In the United States, southern states like Texas still don’t tolerate nonsense and take care of business. However, where school superintendents buy into social justice and social contracts, I find kids are walking all over administrators and teachers, causing mischief on school campus and derailing education for the kids who truly want to learn in school.

God help the United States get it together and restore what was lost.
