Portugal has a 99.4% adult literacy rate and nearly 47% of its college age citizens attend higher education institutions. Portugal has a high literacy rate and is a top choice for international students pursuing a quality education and life. Portuguese Universities have existed since 1290, among which are the oldest engineering school of the Americas and the oldest medical college in Asia.
Poly-technical institutes and higher education in state-run educational establishments also provide students competitive academic options worthy of consideration. Among the American Universities cooperating with Portugal to advance higher education and research is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Portugal spearheaded European exploration of the world and the Age of Discovery. In 1498, Vasco da Gama accomplished what Columbus set out to do, becoming the first European to reach India by sea, bringing economic prosperity to Portugal and launching the Portuguese Renaissance. In 1500, the Portuguese explorer Gaspar Corte-Real reached what is now Canada, long before the French and English in the 17th century, to establish another of many Portuguese colonies in the Americas.

In 1500, Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil and claimed it for Portugal. Ten years later, Afonso de Albuquerque conquered Goa in India, Muscat and Ormuz in the Persian Strait, and Malacca, now a state in Malaysia. Thus, the Portuguese empire held dominion over commerce in the Indian Ocean and South Atlantic. Portuguese sailors further set out to reach Eastern Asia by sailing eastward from Europe, landing in such places as Taiwan, Japan, the island of Timor, and in the Moluccas. The Portuguese also may have discovered Australia in 1521, as Ferdinand Magellan organized a Spanish expedition to the East Indies which resulted in the first circumnavigation of the globe. Thus, Portugal was one of the world’s major economic, military, and political powers from the 15th century until the late 16th century.

Portugal has the 13th largest gold reserve in the world. Traditionally a sea power, Portugal has a strong fishing sector and is one of the countries with the highest fish consumption per capita. Agriculture in Portugal is based on small to medium-sized family-owned dispersed units. Portugal produces a wide variety of crops and livestock products. Portugal’s industry is diversified, ranging from automotive and bicycles, electronics and textiles, to food, chemicals, cement and wood pulp. Modern non-traditional technology-based industries include aerospace, biotechnology and information technology.

Spain is a multilingual state with its immigrant communities speaking Moroccan Arabic, Romanian and English. Spain is a solar power world leader with its massive power station plant called La Florida and is also Europe’s main producer of wind energy. The Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) is the leading public agency dedicated to scientific research in the country, which ranked 5th among top governmental scientific institutions worldwide.

To better serve my students as a University and Career Counselor I gathered all the Portugal universities and Portugal colleges websites into one easy to access and use book.  I hope to return to Portugal and speak at many of its outstanding universities and colleges as well as explore more of this great nation. Increasingly, more students are opting to study at universities and colleges in Portugal, which they deem more affordable and valuable than universities and colleges in the USA and the UK. I myself am open to earning a PhD at a university or college in Portugal, if I am given the opportunity to do so.
